A Bridezilla Icon Retires: Farewell, Valentino

val.jpg
He's outfitted everyone from Courteney Cox to Princess Marie-Chantal of Greece in his fabulous wedding frocks, and now vaunted one-name designer Valentino is retiring. We're heartbrokenly reliving some of his greatest hits, and in the meantime, we'd suggest you snap up some of his latest before he bows out with a final haute couture collection in January. (We like this glamtastic red dress and we're considering replacing the bridal bouquet with this little number.)

How to Write a Brilliant Bridezilla Wedding Thank-You Note

merci_big1.jpgFirst of all, we fully realize that in this online age, few things frighten Bridezilla quite like the uncanny sight of seeing her own handwriting-it's almost as creepy as hearing a home phone ring! But nevertheless, handwritten thank-you cards are one of the last strongholds of old-world wedding civility remaining in our little cyber lives, and as such must be upheld.
Why? Because there are two kinds of brides in this world: classy bridezillas who write warm, witty and heartfelt wedding thank-yous, and those trashy cash-bar having, Clariol brides who can't be bothered. Well let it be known Bridezilla has wasted too much perfectly good Mac Lipglass crossing the latter off her Christmas, Hannukah, and Kwanzaa (hey we love parties, ok?) invitation lists, and we'll have no more of it! Thus, after the jump, please enjoy our swift guide to writing brilliant Bridezilla wedding thank-you cards.

Top Five Fall 2007 Wedding Stationery Trends

Fall is approaching and there's nothing like some fresh new stationery to set the mood for the season of crunchy leaves. Now that you know the importance of written Bridezilla sentiments, fabulous stationery is a must. Bridezilla previewed the latest designer wedding invitation lines from Merrimade to bring you the very best trends for autumn 2007.

cupcake.jpg
Personalization goes Pint-Size. What could be more Victorian than the return of calling cards? Perhaps only the Victorian icon Miss Alice herself, curiously eating cakes that turned her teeny-tiny. On that note, this fall 2007, love turns Lilliputian as we see wedding cake shrunk to individual cupcakes, bouquets distilled to single blooms and wedding invitations including these new chic Kate Spade calling cards from Merrimade. Bridezilla is dialing Kate Spade now to tell her we hope dance cards are next!

Bridezilla Shows Some Skin

croc.jpg
Call us post-Cruella Deville, but darlings, can we all agree that fur is so over? Bunnies are best left hopping through forests and minks are kind of cute for little rat-like things (not dissimilar to the fiance's teenage cousins), so what's a non-vegan to do? Luckily this season offers exotic alternatives to the fluffy Russian debutante look. For the fiercest accessories, it's time that we go cold-blooded. Continue Reading Bridezilla Shows Some Skin »

Monday Bridezilla Bites

vanilla.jpg
Celebrated event designer Preston Bailey just started a blog, Inspirations and Transformations - you may not be able to afford his fee, but it doesn't hurt to keep an eye on what he's saying and get a little inspiration yourself.

In your noble quest to become a full-fledged martini-swilling Dolce and Gabbana-wearing Bridezilla, you'll likely have to deal with everyone you know trying to give you advice. Work your way up to the Bridezilla-brand taser - in the meantime, save stress by taking these tips from Manolo on how to handle excessive advice.

The Hostess Blog suggests a few good Labor Day cocktails, but we think these would be tasty all year round, especially for weddings. We like the Vanilla Lake (pictured) - black and white wedding cocktails, anyone?

Hollywood Bridezillas take note: there are still tickets available to the bridal exposition An Exquisite Event; snap one up and spend this Sunday bagging swag and pretending you're Anna Wintour in the front row of the series of fashion shows.

Dream wedding destinations to get you through Monday morning: the Hotel du Cap Eden Roc in Cannes, or on these shores, the recently renovated Riviera Country Club (link via Bridal Bar Blog).

Bethesda Bridezillas, Take Note!

showcase.gif
The Bridal Wishlist recently tipped us off to a fabulous Bridal Showcase happening this Sunday, September 16th, in Bethesda, Maryland. We can't make it ourselves, but if you'll be in the Washington, D.C. metro area at the time, check out the Bridal Wishlist's Washington Bridal Show Tickets Contest to win free entry to the event!

Not going to be in town this weekend? We suspect D.C. Metro Bridezillas will find Bridal Showcase a great deal of help anyway - just follow the links under "Find" on the left side of the page for an invaluable list of local bridal resources. A list of eligible young senators, however, has yet to be compiled...

A Perfect Wedding Day Body-No Gym Necessary?

alba.jpg

Lately Bridezilla has heard a number of physically stunning celebrities, such as Jessica Alba and Posh Spice, express anti-Stairmaster sentiments, and Bridezilla wants to know, are we missing something? Posh went on record saying, "Maybe it's the whole getting sweaty thing, but it's just not me," and Alba claims not to have set foot in a gym in two months, favoring yoga and water as her workout of choice. Normally Bridezilla would just ignore such an anti-gym trend as the Atkins diet of its time, but considering Jessica Alba and Posh Spice have two of the unequivocally best bodies in the business and are never seen about town red-faced in trainers, a Bridezilla's got to wonder: is exercise, like, optional now? Could it be that we as women have evolved past exertion, and as usual A-listers are just the first to know? Or is that too much to hope?
When you think about it, not neccesarily. Considering the whole elective cesarean epiphany of last year, perhaps women are finding out (celebrity-first, natch) that not only are we too posh to push, we're too posh to perspire in general.
In fact, a brief look at recent history shows that many forms of exercise are already becoming extinct. Bridezilla herself long ago noticed the whiff of Olivia Newton-John tainting traditional aerobics classes, and subsequently opposes both ankle weights and the air guitar with as a matter of principle. Nor will you see us bobbing around in spannies during one of those hopelessly nineties boxing-with-big-bald-instructors affairs.
That said, we're certainly regulars at Bridal Bootcamps because naturally we want to earn our couture and make Monique Lhullier just a little misty at the perfection of our Big-Day bodies. But now we are wondering if such weight room time is just, um, dumb?
Maybe, instead of huffing and puffing on the treadmill like a headband-clad hamster, we could opt for the Posh Spice Workout. Try this on for size: Candlelight Stretch classes accompanied by a live string quartet at the LA Sports Club. Sound a lot better than sweating under the floursecent lights at your local GymsRUs while listening to Fiest on your Ipod? Maybe so, but couple this luxe weight-loss routine with the Posh Diet: strawberries, edemame, and lettuce. Yup, that's it.
We want to know, which plan appeals more to the modern Bridezilla? Traditional gym workouts and three meals a day or the celebrity route of yoga, Pilates (Posh called it "more civilized") and strict eating? There's something to be said for not wanting to be caught covered in sweat while scarfing down potato chips when the impossibly chic Alba or Posh walks by munching a snow pea, but on the other hand, does looking perennially polished make up for an all-asparagus lifestyle? Maybe Bridal Bootcamp and a Big Mac or two are where it's at....
Bridezilla wants to know: What are you doing to be Vera Wang worthy on your Wedding Day? Weigh in on your preferred wedding weight-loss regime below!

Sing Your Way To $10,000

idol.bmp
We can't help it: we just like winning. And the Movin 92.5 Bridal Idol contest is offering up a prize we like: a $10,000 wedding package including a wedding dress, jewelry, beauty treatment, limousine, catering, and a honeymoon in Mexico. All you have to do is record yourself singing karaoke to one of their listed songs, and since all Bridezillas are naturally multi-talented, we expect to see some of our best and brightest holding it down with a decent cover of SexyBack.

Sure, $10,000 might be low-balling it a bit, but just imagine how many pairs of shoes you can buy with the money you'll save! Jimmy Choo, here we come. Right after the bar, anyway, where we'll psych ourselves up with prickly pear margaritas before getting out the microphone. Kelly Clarkson, watch your back!

Wedding Frock of the Week: Yeohlee

yeohlee.jpg
If your decor is more sleek modernism than shabby chic, you're probably already bringing that mindset to your wedding planning. So why not go all the way? This Yeohlee dress is sleek and unexpectedly avant-garde - just like you are. We love the unique approach to the traditional train, and the simple design means you'll be living the minimalist aesthetic you so admire. We recommend accessorizing with nothing more than your own fabulousness, darling Bridezilla - after all, with a statement frock like this, what more is there to even add?

Want it for yourself? Turn your eye here.

Bridezilla of the Month: Jennifer Lucas

jennifer_lucas.thumbnail.jpg

The Bridezilla of the Month is Hollywood Producer Miss Jennifer Lucas, who just married her love of six years, "Comics Unleashed" cast member Byron Allen. What could be more Bridezilla than a lavish ceremony for 120 guests on the Bel-Aire Hotel Lawn? Only a romantic red-themed reception in the hotel ballroom, including scarlet balloons, loads of crimson roses and a five-tiered wedding cake.
The star-studded guest list included Natalie Cole and Eddie Murphy, and the whole event was planned by famous celebrity wedding planner Mindy Weiss.
What makes this wedding so Bridezilla? For one thing, we love the fact that Lucas is keeping her name, and how for once in Hollywood it's a man marrying his producer, instead of the other way around (ie Christina, Shania, Janet). Also we love the way she worked a tasteful theme through her wedding (scarlett hues) without being cheesy about it.
Last but not least, Lucas's wedding ensemble consisted of a white Carolina Herrera strapless creation and one of Bridezilla's favorite new trends, a ribbon-trimmed veil. Congrats to the happy couple!

Discount Meets Designer; Reasonably-Priced Romance Develops

beaded.jpg
It all started with the classic love story of boy meets major corporation and falls in love; ah, the intensely modern romance between a man and a chain store. We're not generally too wild about that sort of genre-defying potential brand downgrade, but who at this point is going to argue with the wild success of Isaac Mizrahi's collaboration with Target? Isaac's bringing cashmere to the masses and designing surprisingly affordable wedding dresses has us feeling exceptionally open to the prospect of designer collaborations. Anyway, how could we ever turn down affordable Vera Wang? Continue Reading Discount Meets Designer; Reasonably-Priced Romance Develops »

How to Complain Successfully

bridezilla.jpg

It is a known fact that Bridezillas love complaining. Why? We think Professional Complainer Miss B.L. Ochman says it best: "I think you should demand to get what you pay for... If nobody ever complains, mediocrity is perpetuated."
After hearing this immortal statement, we knew that there was a Bridezilla in our midst, and that we simply had to do an article based on Ochman's advice on how to successfully complain.
But should you need more proof of Ochman's complaint credentials before we begin, consider the following:

What clients have received as a result of Ochman's successful kvetches:

A) A New Fridge
B) A New Washing Machine
C) New Cars
D) A box of Twinkies for a guy who's entire carton came without cream (we know, cruel)

If Ochman could score a new Whirlpool for one of her clients, surely you could get a discounted wedding dress or at least some complimentary champagne for all the pain and suffering a Bridezilla bears. Read on for tips on how to try Ochman's complaint tactics at home:

Wedding Frock O' the Week: Ralph Lauren Spring 2008

FWD901_Ralph_Lauren.jpg

Dizzy off the throes of a fierce Fashion Week, one powerhouse frock from Ralph Lauren's Spring 2008 collection stood out to Bridezilla as most wedding-day worthy. This stylish statement of a dress is sexy-elegant, not that stiff-chic we're so sick of, not to mention we love love love the veiled hat, such a symbol of strong, dramatic romance. The fluid ruffles of the slit leg move like pure poetry and keep the dress fun with just a hint of funk. No doubt we will see both the veiled hat and the black and white wedding gown in heavy rotation for fall weddings, thanks to this fabulous runway show. Last but not least, Bridezilla finds the riding crop a very innovative prop, probably because with a few jewels or flowers it could easily double as a scepter (new bouquet anyone?) Bridezilla Bottom Line: 40 years in the business, and Ralph Lauren's still got it. Bravo, says Bridezilla, Bravo!

Fall Wedding Trend: Beige Goes Breathtaking

angelfall.jpg

From pilgrim to picnic, incarnations of beige are all the rage for fall wedding gowns. Indeed, the elevation of beige is one of Bridezilla's favorite trend to emerge from Bridal Fashion Week.
Do not be alarmed, gentle readers. Before the Spring 2008 Bridal Collections, Bridezilla too viewed beige as a shade best relegated to bar mitzvah suits and funeral flowers. But, like straw into gold, this overlooked color has reincarnated from a loose bride's white into a subtler, more mellow champagne color we just can't get enough of. After a spring and summer heavy on cloying green and pinks, we welcome this elegant change and its crisp, modern connotations. Still not convinced? Check out Bridezilla's dazziling round up of beautiful beige wedding dresses, and you'll see why we'd totally plight our troth in these posh frocks.

Wednesday Name Brand Pronunciation: Manolo Blahnik

Manolo Blahnik
Pronunciation:
muh-no-lo blah-nick

manolo.jpg
The shiniest, most comfortable shoes you could possibly wear down the aisle.

In case you're having trouble with the pronunciation up there, the real way to say Manolo Blahnik is in a low, reverent whisper. You have to earn your way up to talking Manolos - a la Carrie Bradshaw - like Blahnik is your best friend and not really the chief enemy of your bank account. In the meantime, revel in the history of one of the shoe world's most well-know names: Manolo grew up in the Canary Islands, where he was raised on a banana plantation. From there he went on to study literature at the University of Geneva, and then art in Paris. At barely 31 he opened his first store in London and he hasn't stopped making gorgeous shoes since. With a bio like that, how could the man help but exist at the forefront of fantasy fashion?

We love these silvery-white Metallic Slingback Pumps because they hold the balance between pristine pre-dyed white and nightclub-ready silver, so they'll be shiny fabulous beneath your wedding dress while still ceremony-appropriate enough not to scandalize grandma. Can't get enough Manolo? Pick up these Broach D'Orsay Pumps, too - something about the d'Orsay style is just eternally right for every formal occasion, and these topaz and gold pumps can take you from the rehearsal dinner to the honeymoon with no trouble at all.

Bridezilla Dream Destinations: Parrot Cay

parrot.jpg
Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner got married there. Bruce Willis has a villa there (which you can rent). It's the relaxation destination for stars like Julia Roberts, Janet Jackson, Jerry Seinfeld and Barbra Streisand, and a few hundred years ago it sourced its original, less tourist-friendly name Pirate Cay from such eye-patched pirate luminaries as Calico Jack Rackham and his badass female cohorts Mary Read and Anne Bonny. With a pedigree like that, how could you not want to visit the Turks & Caicos island destination Parrot Cay? Continue Reading Bridezilla Dream Destinations: Parrot Cay »

Kick Your Way Into The World Of Exotic Animal Prints

ocelot.jpg
Despite its prevalence on the fall runways, the all-over animal print look is just not for everyone - at least not for those of us lacking the New Jersey mob mistress style gene. When you're rocking an animal print, forego the eighties excess of big hair and red nails and turn your exotics chic by kicking your way into the trend with animal print heels. Think of them as baby steps toward a leopard-print Dolce & Gabbana extravaganza - after all, the journey of a thousand miles begins with one well-shod step, whether it's toward the altar or simple fashion infamy. The Five Most Bridezilla-Friendly Cities in the U.S.

long.jpg
For this Friday's edition of The Finer Things In Life, we decided to tackle one of the very most important considerations in a Bridezilla's life: where are you going to live? We hit up FindYourSpot.com and took the quiz to discover the ideal city in which to settle down once the ceremony's passed and the marriage begins. Although the quiz somehow excluded important considerations like proximity to designer boutiques, availability of fresh Maine lobster, and relative attractiveness of inhabitants, we still think we managed to get a pretty representative sample of the best cities in which to exercise your Bridezilla tendencies. A Decorative Way To Never Forget His Sister's Name Again

leaves.jpg
You know all the family stories about your Great Uncle Matthew the rum runner and Great Grandma Betty the suffragette turned flapper (a new Bridezilla born every minute), but who's lurking in the new husband's family tree? With this newlywed activity you can discover all your new hubby's sordid family secrets and come out with a fabulous new decoration for the wall.

Although on principle Bridezilla loathes all crafting (we leave all that to our similarly-surnamed buddy Craftzilla), we've been romanced by Red Envelope's Couple's Genealogy Tree. Bribe the mister with rum punch and promises that you can put this up on the wall instead of the Chagall you were gunning for at the next Christie's auction and he'll be glad to buckle down in front of the fire for an evening of storytelling and hand-crafting. If he takes more convincing, just pledge that you'll fill his side of the family tree with barons, counts, and vagrants, and rename every one of his brothers Anastasia - he'll come around.

The Bloom Is Off The Rose - What Now?

endela.JPG
There are only so many things you can do with long-stemmed flowers in vases - upgrading the vase to Lalique crystal and stuffing in a bouquet of stargazers is just about the apex of that experience. Outside of old-fashioned daisy chains, what else can you do with your wedding flowers?

We love this idea, via The Spiraled Stem: loose blooms. They used gorgeous Vendela rose blooms as accents everywhere from the buffet table to the wedding cake itself, and the effect is perfectly divine. We like the creamy white blossoms scattered about, but for an extra Bridezilla touch we say upgrade them to red, the color of love, happiness, and the fiery temper you'll display if the wedding planner tries to convince you that a thousand blossoms aren't feasible for decoration. Want to set the decor truly aflame? Mix in smaller blooms in shades of orange and yellow and sprinkle a little gold glitter on each for a truly eye-catching look.

The Well-Bred Bridezilla: The Best Etiquette Books

tiff.jpg
Although we're not immune to the occasional Anastasia-esque turn of fudging the truth of our origins, as Bridezillas we endeavor to make our well-bred beginnings completely unquestionable. While name-dropping the countesses in our ancestry is usually enough to quiet any naysayers, we find the best way to be deemed aristocratic is not to pretend it, but rather to become it. And short of marrying into royalty, the best way to do this is with fine manners.

Since most of us weren't born and bred to be the perfectly polite ladies we've grown into, it's been necessary to get a little help along the way. Thus we present the three best etiquette books for every stage of life: teenager, grown woman, and Bridezilla.

Oh Double Stick Fashion Tape - how did we ever live without it? We like the attention right where it belongs, on us, and a shortcut to getting that attention is a sexy slit to the navel top that reveals only what we want it to reveal: our charming personalities. And torsos.

Less endowed Bridezillas love this tape for its ability to keep strapless dresses in place; we've found that it works for everything from J-Lo style statements to demure strapless looks. But let's not kid ourselves - right now, we're after the dress under the cut...

Fall Wedding Trend #5: Wedding Salon Spectacular

DSCN0297.jpg

5Orchids, orchids everywhere.

If there is one in-demand fall flower for 2007, it is undoubtedly the orchid. From single blooms placed on table settings, to lush clusters stuffed elaborately into tall elegant vases, to orchids hanging from the ceiling with dainty translucent threads, interpersed with crystal strands, these exotic flowers were absolutely everywhere at Wedding Salon. As one wedding vendor pointed out to Bridezilla, orchids are a great choice for wedding flowers because there is such a huge variety of color and style. Also, despite their delicate appearance, orchids are actually extremely resilient blooms, long outlasting their more fickle flower sisters-not unlike Bridezilla herself! Costly but worth it, Bridezillas would be wise to incorporate orchids into their autumn affairs for an elegant, unexpected look. Bridezilla Bonus Tip: Intersperse orchids with crystals, hanging vases or branches for a Bridezilla This Minute motif.
