Queen of Style: Black, White and Classic All Over

Audrey Hepburn Sabrina Givenchy wedding dress

Audrey Hepburn is one of those icons who inspire many to take a step outside of tradition while holding strong to pure class and elegance.  The Givenchy wedding dress she wore in the film Sabrina has created a ripple effect throughout the evening gown and bridal industry with many replicas trying to live up to the simple grace of the original.

There are many Sabrina-esque styles to choose from, but there are also plenty of new takes on the perfect pairing.  Inspired by the Hepburn era, designers Dolce and Gabbana created a mash-up of old Hollywood style meets rule-breaking Warhol for their Marilyn Monroe portrait bridal gown.

The classic duet of black and white is the go-to palette for any bride wanting the ultimate in sharp sophistication; no other color scheme can impose a state of dramatic luxury quite like it.  Let that paired down polish take center stage in a regal form-fitting number.

Go the unexpected route with a little Victorian boudoir flavor.  The inverted mix of a traditional white bridal gown beneath a sea of inky petticoat ruffles ushers in a mood of sultry, dark romance.  Sheer layers of shade help to soften this show-stopper:

Float on the clouds in a feathery dream.  Take an otherwise classic color combination and turn it on its head.  In a milky hue, this light and airy gown takes flirty charm to new heights.  It’s the kind of dress that makes you want to sing, “I feel pretty, oh, so pretty…” while twirling around the room.

My personal favorite comes courtesy of a December 2008 Vogue UK photo shoot featuring the eccentric couple of Tim Burton and Helena Bonham Carter.  The whimsy of the court jester overlay brings a special carnival feel to the dress.  Mix that with any quirky headpiece and you have yourself one vivid and captivating bridal gown.

  1. Hello! I desperately want to try on the 3rd dress, the one with the black bodice and blue background but can’t seem to find it anywhere. Can someone tell me who makes this or where I can find it?

    Thank you!!

  2. Hey does anyone know where i can find the fourth dress- the one with the white bodice and black and white tulle full skirt?

    • The fourth dress down is a Max Chaoul dress. The original Max Chaoul boutique is located in Lyons, France. Additional boutiques are located throughout Europe and the United States, including locations in Paris, Marseilles, London, New York and Beverly Hills. I’m not sure if there are any online sales of his dresses, but I know the Max Chaoul site welcomes email inquiries. Happy hunting.

  3. Is there any place to buy the black and white strapless gown by Max Chaoul or is there a look-a-like anywhere?

    • I have seen some online retailers selling his gowns, but I don’t know how trustworthy the sites are or if they are actually Max Chaoul’s dresses. I would say your best bet is to email the boutique and ask them if they happen to be selling that particular style anywhere around the world or online.

    • I saw that someone was selling it (Jan. 2012) on ebay for $18,000 US size 4. However, since it’s a Dolce and Gabbana gown, I would go to the website for a phone number and ask them if they still make that particular style (the gown is from F/W 2009).
